Behind Glass

posted by Bridget on 19 May 2014

I met Anne Berry at Fotofest in Houston and was captivated by her portraits of monkeys.

For anyone who knows me they know that I am not exactly an animal person, and I don't rush to pat the head of a dog, or stroke a cat when I see one. So when I met Anne Berry at this year's Fotofest portfolio reviews in Houston I surprised myself by liking her series of portraits of monkeys and apes, shot in zoos throughout Europe.

Anne Berry

There is a melancholic air to the photographs, a sense of resignation, tinged with a nostalgia evoked by black and white processing. Berry has a concern about animals and eco-systems, but this series is not really an anti-zoo project, she is more interested in the inter-relationship between human and animal and the contradiction inherent in the urge to conserve [zoology] and entertain.

For me, the human-like gaze of the animals peering out of their glass-encased enclosures seemed almost to speak about a state of humanity in a world, beset by conflict and economic oppression, encased in their own cages.

Vagabond Photographer

Sergio Larrain's posthumous publication, Sergio Larrain: Vagabond Photographer has won the 2014 Kraszna-Krausz Photography Book Award.

Sergio Larrain

One of the highlights of the 2013 Rencontres D'Arles was the retrospective exhibition of the Chilean photographer, Sergio Larrain. A relatively unknown photographer, who started his career with Magnum, he eventually sought a self-sufficient life teaching yoga in the hills of his home country.

But for the relatively short time of picture making, Larrain was a force of energy, invention and real concern for the plight of humanity. His photographs are more than a document of poverty and a devastated post war world. He created images that look beyond the event or street life, conjuring a complex rhythm of composition, bold cropping and alternative angles that cause us to look deeply into each photograph to understand what the photographer himself, was looking at.

Sergio Larrain said of his work "I can give form to this world of fantasies when I feel certain resonate inside me," This mix of social and poetic concerns is brilliantly brought together in his photography.

Sergio Larrain: Vagabond Photographeris a deserved winner of the2014 Kraszna-Krausz Photography Book Award.
