Video of the Day | Hijacked III

posted by Michael on 28 February 2012

Last week Hijacked III opened in Perth in Australia. It will also open on 3rd March 2012 at Quad in Derby.

The third in a series of two country photographic cross collaborations, Hijacked has brought together Australian photography with work from the USA, Germany and now in its third incarnation with the UK.

Troika Editions was commissioned to make the supporting videos. We will post them here over the next week.

The first video is an interview with Leigh Robb, one of the Hijacked curators and curator at the Perth Institute for Contemporary Arts. Inevitably putting together the work from two different countries offers the chance to compare and contrast and raises the question as to whether there is such a thing as a national photography or even if you consider it further, whether photography (or indeed any cultural form) can at all be identified directly with any identity, such as African photography or British photography etc.

Obviously photography can come from a particular nation or city but personally I think any form of culture does not, and can not, exist within the static boundaries of a particular identity. Culture transcends identity.

Needless to say there are many other positions on this question, and in our first video Leigh Robb argues there is no such things as Australian or British photography.
