Troika NewsletterWe are delighted to bring you our July Critic's Choice by Diane Smyth of the British Journal of Photography.

Diane has chosen "Willsbridge" by Tom Pope from his series "Over the Edge" and writes:

"...this is serious funny business. Tom Pope's playing the Fool, a naive but intelligent role. Fools don't play by the rules, in fact they seem incapable of it, and that's what makes them absurd. But that's what makes them visionary too. "Not all there" in this world, they have a special take on it, and were once revered for it."

Tom is currently studying at the Royal College of Art where he is pursuing his ideas about anarchy and the absurd. In April 2010 his portrait of the scientist Stephen Jones was selected as the National Portrait Gallery's Photograph of the Month and his series "The Escapades of the Higher Man" was shown at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea.

We Recommend: Sally Mann

Sally Mann's much overdue first solo UK show is on at The Photographer's Gallery.

Described by Time Magazine in 2001 as America's best photographer, Mann is on record as saying she wants to be provocative, "I like pushing buttons", but she remains exasperated by the attention she continues to receive for being the photographer who takes pictures of naked children.

This exhibition takes work from several powerful photographic series from throughout her long career and clearly demonstrates the breadth of her subject matter and adventurous use of technique. Exhibition runs until 19th September. MORE>>
