Picture of the Day | Week of Free Range

posted by Bridget on 28 June 2012

The second week of the Free Range Degree shows included presentations from University of the Creative Arts, Farnham; Nottingham Trent; New College Swindon; Stephenson College Edinburgh; University of the West of England; Swansea Metropolitan University; University of Derby; De Monfort University; University College Falmouth; University of Central Lancashire and City fo Westminster College.

Hats off to Swansea who presented a coherent exhibition, that not only had good and effective signage, letting the visitors know which college they were looking at but also had a lot of the most interesting work on show.

On arriving at the Truman Brewery I had gone up the stairs that led to one of the main spaces. Looking around it was almost impossible to know which college was exhibiting in the space. Nothing on the info boards or caption/credit signs. It turned out to be UCA Farnham, which was a surprise as the tutors there are very good and very hot on presentation and professional practise.

The space, which is open plan, was shared by a number of other colleges and the borders between each institution was difficult to discern which meant the display became rather random and without institutional identity.

The exception was Nottingham Trent, who had presented their students' work well and had clearly invested time and effort into producing an excellent catalogue. Nottingham had decided to charge for it, which at £2 was less than a price of a cup of coffee and well worth the investment. Interestingly Swindon were also charging for their catalogue, this time at £3 which seemed somehow too much.

So my first pick is a young video maker and photographic artist, Rebecca Morgan from SMU. She had three videos running in tandem, based on contemporary views of women in society. I wasn't convinced by the politics which was laboured, but the humour and concept were very good. Unhappily I can't find a link for the videos, but if you get a chance to see them then make sure you watch the mowing the lawn story to the end.

Here is a still from applying lipstick, which is finely balanced between being obsessionally witty and sinisterly aggressive
