New Photography Venue in London

Somerset House is to become the exhibition gallery of choice for Positive View Foundation

A new philanthropic foundation, which will use contemporary photography to promote its charitable impulse of introducing photography to disadvantaged people, was launched in April 2012 and will hold their inaugural exhibition at Somerset House with the headline grabbing "Cartier-Bresson: A Question of Colour".

The foundation's website states "We exist to stage world class exhibitions and events that present the most important contemporary photography from around the globe.

And we use our profits to support the Positive View 'Education Programme' that establishes photography projects for organisations working with disadvantaged young people."

Employing the renowned William A Ewing to curate the shows, this first presentation looks at the possibility of using colour photography to capture the "decisive moment" and Ewing has amassed an impressive collection of photographers to make his point that working in colour can be as expressive and decisive as working in black and white. Included in the show is photography from the great colourists, Saul Lieter, Alex Webb, Joel Meyerowitz and Harry Gruyaert.

Exhibition opens 8th November and runs to 27th January 2013.

What will be interesting to watch is how important the foundation's future exhibitions will be for exploring contemporary photography and pushing our understanding of it or whether they will rely upon the blockbuster favourites in order to ensure brisk business at the ticket tills. Next up in 2013 is a show based on the environment and landscape featuring Edward Burtynsky....
