Matthew has made this space deliberately ambiguous, allowing the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the photograph, where memory and imagination give ownership of its story to us.

As we peer into the space we begin to see that all is not as it should be. Our initial acceptance that this is a real room in a real house, where people live, starts to be undermined. Where are the skirting boards, the door frames and the electric sockets? Matthew has pared down this space to an almost brutal geometric simplicity, leaving just the walls and windows.

Shot on black and white film, Matthew's use of tone, from white, through gentle greys to near black seduces the eye. There is a dreamlike quality urging us to fill the space with our story, noise and furniture.
