Often sited in the middle of these parks, with footpaths leading to them from all directions, the bandstands play host to society's changing uses for them, acting as silent witnesses to the layers of history that are slowly laid down.

Taking a typological approach, Jon has defined a methodology suited to uncovering this history and applied it to each of the bandstands he has photographed. Using the octagonal symmetry of the structure, Jon creates eight images that emphasis the importance of the building within its environment. In taking a photograph of each of its eight elevations Jon then builds up the layers until the bandstand appears solid against an indeterminate background. Because each of the eight views reinforce each other the bandstand leaps out of the photograph, while the varying backgrounds of visiting people and the surrounding trees register only partially and so form ghostly references to the location.

The ethereal nature of Jon's work gives a sense of the passage of time. Even as the people coming to visit change and as the seasons pass the bandstand remains constant, standing proud.
