Tom enacts his fantasy of being able to fly and captures moments in which he appears to defy gravity, and in so doing manages to blur the boundaries between fact and fiction. Is he just jumping or is he flying? Tom chooses not to tell.
Following in the tradition of surrealist and absurd humour, Tom becomes an invented character when he wears his tailored suit. The element of surprise and unexpected juxtapositions such as this flying character in a suit with a passing couple are central to his art. He maintains some control, through his deliberate choice of background or landscape but encourages unpredictable consequences by using a cable release and so is not able to see what is actually photographed. The result is a true happenstance, where the viewer can be both amused and puzzled by what is presented to them.
