NB: This is a Lambda print on C-type photographic paper. All our prints come with a certificate signed by the artist and a unique edition number. The prints are produced with a white border around the photograph to allow for framing. We also have included some cotton gloves to protect the print during handling.

On a December evening in 2002, Liam Bailey was driving home from his studio when an abandoned football got caught under one of the wheel arches of his car. This chance encounter seemed to kick-start a sequence of almost uncannily frequent meetings with old footballs and over a period of time Liam had collected over sixty of the original's battered compatriots.

Liam decided to photograph the footballs, framing the project as a response to the way in which many contemporary artists choose to give found objects, naked, unadulterated and resolutely ordinary, the status of an art work. Instead Liam began to think about how to portray their histories, the journey from being a new present for a child, or pristine before the big match, to the bruised and battered state, ripped at the seams and deflated, in which they were discarded. Liam has returned to them back their character, their personalities and individual histories.

Shot under the studio lighting of the celebrity portrait, the balls take on a new and surreal appearance, revealing touching and often comic physiognomies.
