Travelling with a large format field camera, documentary photographer Kurt Tong recorded his impressions of one of the world's most isolated and remote places for his book "Farewell in Labrador".

Situated on the Eastern Coast of Canada, Labrador is a collection of small islands, many of which are only accessible by a weekly boat service. Faced with a population of less than 30,000, limited work opportunities, a dying fishing industry and the closure of an important American airbase, the communities are gradually dying out.

Tong spent nearly three months exploring the long coastline, its coastal towns and villages to produce a visual story that with a poetic sensibility conjures images of isolation and loneliness. This series of emotive landscapes, portraits and still lifes evoke memories of a bygone era.
