FORMAT International Photography Festival is one of the UK's leading contemporary photography Biennials.

Located in Derby, the festival includes exhibitions, portfolio reviews, workshops, commissions, summer school, conference, screenings, talks, photo collectives, publications, an international meeting place, opportunities for mass participation and much more.

On the alternate years the festival organises a professional practice programme, a conference, talks and exhibitions.

The festival celebrates the wealth of contemporary approaches to photography that exist internationally, showing a range of new work alongside some of the best-known practitioners in the world.

Festival Director/Curator Louise Clements said: "FORMAT festival celebrates emerging artists alongside world famous artists and is the place to see what is new and innovative in photographic practice. FORMAT is becoming increasingly important for the East Midlands region and is one of the leading events in the UK cultural calendar. The festival is arguably up there with the best in Europe and was rated among the top 40 in a recent European survey, recognising that the quality and ambition of the work is fantastic. Derby has established roots in photography and our festival celebrates the past while developing new histories for the city of Derby and local region."

It will be difficult to miss FORMAT in 2011 as the festival takes to the streets and which will come alive with photography, making it an adventure to explore the city and discover the art. The hub of activity will be QUAD, Derby's Arts Centre, plus exhibitions and events in 30 other venues throughout the city. Already the impact, both creative and economic, has begun to be recognised, with the festival having an effect on the visitor economy with increased numbers staying in hotels, visiting restaurants or shopping while they are here.

"Our future plans include partnerships to develop the sale of artists' work, international awards for practitioners, international tours of festival exhibitions to China and India, plus satellite venues developing in London and Nottingham."
