Stuart's work centres on nocturnal landscapes, which he creates with the use of studio lights and imposed stage-like settings. There is nothing documentary or observed in his photography, instead he prefers to employ the control offered by portable studio lighting techniques when making his work.
While Stuart uses the apparatus of commercial photography, his imagery isn't buried in the contemporary gloss of this genre. Instead he creates that "moment" of photography when something magical happens and the picture begins to engage with the viewer's imagination.
Stuart graduated with a BA [honours] in Photographic Art from the University of Wales, Newport in 2007 and is currently studying for his MA at the Royal College of Art. In addition to his Flashforward Award and RCA Bursary, Stuart has also won a Fujifilm Distinction Award in 2008; the 2007 Reginald Salisbury Travel Scholarship and the 2007 MPD Graduate Future Partnership Award. He has exhibited at The Photographer's Gallery as part of the "Freshfaced and Wildeyed" group show, 2008; in the Artsway Open, 2009; in the RWA 2008 Open and in Descubrimientos PHE08, PhotoEspana, Madrid.
