An informal Q & A

Which photographer or artist do you most admire?

At the moment I really admire Jim Goldberg's new work.

What artwork, where money is no object, would you like to hang on your wall?

"Femme assise se coiffant" a drawing by Degas in the Courtauld Institute. As a student I used to go often just look at it.

Which famous artists, living or dead, would you invite to a dinner party?

Tacita Dean, Rinko Kawauchi, Auguste Rodin, Paula Rego, Paul Gauguin, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Cornelia Parker, Josef Koudelka.

When are you at your happiest?

In the sea.

What is your most treasured possession?

My bike.

What book are you reading at the moment?

Alan Bennett's "Untold Stories"

What made you laugh recently?

The kids I teach to swim always make me laugh.

What really winds you up?

People who thoughtlessly follow pointless rules.

What would your dream project be?

I'd like to do a long term project in the Black Mesa region in the US, where local people are being moved off their land to make way for coal mines.

What do you do when not working?

Cook and eat with friends, spend time in the countryside, build bonfires, play music, read books.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Stories are among the many things that motivate me. I was recently inspired by the story of Henri Rouseau, who never travelled, instead creating jungle paintings from what he saw at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.

How you would you like to be remembered?

Warmly.

What music would you like played at your funeral?

I don't mind but there should be lots of it.
